DENVER

M.D.C. Holdings, Inc. (www.RichmondAmerican.com), which builds homes under the name "Richmond American Homes," today announced that it received 554 home orders in October 2000. This represents a 5% increase on a "same-store" basis compared with the 569 home orders received in October 1999. The Company experienced higher year-over-year home orders in October 2000 in Phoenix (up 95%), due to a higher number of active subdivisions, and Northern California (up 63%), primarily as a result of the continued strong demand for homes in this market. The Company has received orders for 6,935 homes for the ten months ended October 31, 2000, an increase of 7% over the 6,460 home orders received for the same period in 1999.

MDC is one of the largest homebuilders in the United States. The Company also provides mortgage financing, primarily for MDC's home buyers, through its wholly owned subsidiary, HomeAmerican Mortgage Corporation. MDC is a major regional homebuilder with a significant presence in some of the country's best housing markets. The Company is the largest homebuilder in metropolitan Denver; among the top five homebuilders in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland, Tucson and Colorado Springs; and among the top ten homebuilders in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Southern California and the San Francisco Bay area.
